Bowling is Back!

Great news! Youbou Lanes is now open for “Family Bubble” Bowling rental requests for groups of 9 or fewer people. Three days’ notice is recquired and the lanes are not available for rental on statutory holidays (such as September 7, Labour Day). If you’re interested in booking a bowling experience with your bubble, call 250-749-6742, ext. 0 for more details.

Sadly, traditional Youbou league play (Tuesday men, Thursday ladies, Sunday mixed) cannot occur this fall season due to Covid-19 safety guidelines. This also means drop-in public bowling on Friday and Saturday nights for families and adults will not be happening, so no loonie or toonie nights for the foreseeable future.

Pickleball at Youbou Hall

Youbou Hall will re-open for indoor pickleball on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings this fall. Interested players must join the CVRD pickleball program for a 6-month- ($85) or year-long ($125) membership. Anyone wishing to play on a certain day must pre-register within 72 hours of the desired play time. Membership and registration can be done through www.reccowichan.ca or at the arena office at 250-749-6742, ext. 0. Because only 12 players can be in the hall at the same time (8 playing, 4 waiting), pre-registration is essential. Sorry, no drop-ins can be allowed. We’ll soon get used to these new protocols and it will feel like old-time pickleball at the hall!

Hall Rentals

If you’re interested in renting Youbou Hall for a private event, please call the CVRD at 250-749-6742, ext. 0 or email clradmin@cvrd.bc.ca. The staff will know the latest guidelines and will be able to help you plan an event that enables you and your loved ones to enjoy the hall safely.

Trash Talk

It’s always a bit confusion when the garbage schedule shifts from the summer to fall, and with bears abounding, we don’t want our full cans sitting in the road without a scheduled pick-up. Throughout September, trash will continue to be collected every Friday in Youbou, with recycling being picked up every other week, so September 11 and 25. After October 9, trash will only be picked up every other week, with recycling, so no garbage pick-up on will occur on October 16 or 30. For the complete schedule, please go to: https://www.cvrd.bc.ca/2963/Collection-Schedules

Recruiting Emergency Support Volunteers

The Youbou Emergency Support (YES) team has not forgotten we still may face an emergency (power-outage storm or other crisis) that would call for neighbours to help neighbours. While it seems strange to think about the need for a community shelter during these days of social bubbles and crowd avoidance, that need will remain, long after social isolation ends. To further the goal of providing community safety and service, several YES/YCA members are taking the Emergency Support Services (ESS) Level 1 Responder program. We hope that you too might think about stepping up to become a Level 1 Responder. The courses can all be done online and are free to volunteers. If you’re interested or want more information about the program, please contact Merrick Grieder, Acting Emergency Support Services Director, at 250-715-6618 or ess@cvrd.

On the Road Again

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) recently carried out repairs to the culvert and ditches emerging from Youbou Road at the corner of Bremner Road. A storm in January had caused significant erosion and deposition of boulders. The repairs included clearing out the ditch on the west side of Bremner and reinforcing the eroded outfall. A new section of culvert was added and the ground regraded and topped with gravel.
