Church Society Meeting

The Youbou Community Church Society is hosting its next meeting on Saturday, January 14, in the lower hall. All are welcome!

Fun at the Pub

Deliciously good times are rolling at the Youbou Bar & Grill this winter. On January 7, the chef will be unveiling a new menu to add a little variety to our routines.

Paint night follows on January 14, with a focus on painting mountain ranges. The evening starts at 5 pm and includes dinner, drink, and painting supplies, all for $55. Sorry, this event it sold out.

Whiskey lovers will want to mark January 21 on their calendars. The pub will be offering a whiskey tasting, with tapas, and music by Kent Ball, all for $80.

Indoor Market Update

The Youbou Indoor Market (that was the outdoor market) is moving to a once-a-month schedule. From January through April, the market will occur on the last Sunday of the month from 10 am to 2 pm at Youbou Hall, so the next market will be on Sunday, January 29.

New Year’s Eve Blast

What a party it was! 2023 started off on a high note with The Joints aka Eagle Eyes playing for a sell-out crowd at Youbou Hall on New Year’s Eve. The tables were decorated with party hats and whistles, the balloon drop at midnight was magical, and party-goers danced the night away. Most notable was the 50/50 draw, which netted $1,284 total, with Rita Vivienne winning $642. The Youbou Community Association worked intensely to plan this event and appreciates everyone coming out to celebrate with us.

Many thanks are due to those working behind the scenes to make this event such a success:

Thumbs up also to the decorating volunteers: Al and Susanne Thom, Noni Bandstra, Bee Greenway, Pibbs (Leslie) Greenway, Judy Raby, Mindy, and above board members.

And three cheers to those who stayed into the wee hours and came back the next day to clean up: Jean Atkinson, Dan Martinusen, Joanne White, Lyle Kuchmak, Bee Greenway, Noni Bandstra, Al and Susanne Thom, and above board members.

And special thanks to all the local businesses who supported the event by selling tickets and making this a sell-out: Cassy’s Coffeehouse, Youbou General Store, Daly’s Auto Centre, Youbou Bar & Grill, and Ed’s Coffeehouse in Lake Cowichan. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Holiday Lights Winners
Congratulations to Donna Walker and Ray for earning first place in the Cowichan Lake Chamber of Commerce outdoor decorating contest. Their display on Swordfern was chosen as the best from all the homes nominated around the lake, so a round of applause for their hard work and creativity. In case you missed it, we’ve included a photo.

TOPS Is Tops

Shedding a few pounds after too many holiday sugar plums may be on your New Year’s resolutions list. You can find good support and company at the TOPs meeting every Tuesday at 10:30 at the church. TOPS stands for Take Off Pounds Sensibly, which sounds like a good plan.

YCA Annual General Meeting

The YCA will be hosting its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, February 12, at Youbou Hall. We’ll be electing board members for 2023, giving our year-end report, sharing preliminary results from our survey, as well as unveiling some of our plans for 2023. If you’re interested in serving on the board, contact julia@raedwulf.org. We hope to see you there!

Take Our Survey

The YCA will be conducting a community survey over the next few weeks to find out where the community thinks we should concentrate our efforts. We’ll be posting a link on our facebook page and also in the next newsletter. It should take only about 5 minutes to respond.

Valentine Tea

You’re invited to an afternoon of coffee, tea and sweet treats at the church on Saturday, February 11, from 11 am to 2 pm. The Church Society is eager to show off the recent renovations that have given our community building a fresh face. You’ll also have the opportunity to buy some home-baked items from some of Youbou’s best bakers, hand-crafted items, and a few second-hand treasures.
