Supporting Youbou
During these tough times, we understand that some in our community may have lost jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. The Youbou Community Association recently voted to help by supporting the local food bank. We found we could donate $500 and designate funds toward Youbou/Area I residents through a Virtual Bottle Drive. The information on this fundraising initiative is included, if you would like to help as well. To donate, you can email: donate.lakecowfoodbank@gmail.com. And if you need a little extra help in stocking your pantry, you can apply for support by calling Cowichan Lake Community Services at 250-749-6822 on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 10 am and 2 pm. Thanks go to Area I residents Max Russell and Tracy Hamilton for inventing the Virtual Bottle Drive idea, getting approval, and implementing the plan. Our appreciation also goes to Shop & Save store in Youbou, which receives the designated vouchers to help beneficiaries fill their grocery carts. Thank you!
Garage Sale Cancelled
Sadly, our annual garage sale, which was scheduled for May 23, is just not the type of activity we should be doing at this time. While we love going around to different homes and finding treasures during normal times, the YCA feels we could not successfully manage social distancing throughout the community at such an event, given the issues around exchanging money, visiting different people’s property, and handling merchandise from other households. We look forward to brighter days next year when we can return to this popular community event.
Youbou Clean-Up Postponed
The previously announced May 30 Youbou Clean-Up is postponed indefinitely. We do not want to expose our volunteers to risk, nor stress the Meade Creek facility, with the activities of our annual clean-up day. The Meade Creek facility does remain open for Youbou residents to recycle or drop off unwanted items on their own. The Youbou Community Association hopes it can reschedule this event for later in the year, but cannot announce a date until social distancing restrictions are lifted.
First Annual Crab Fest Postponed
While the Youbou Community Association had hoped to initiate a Crab Fest at the hall on July 4, we have decided to postpone that event as well. While our mission remains finding fun ways to bring the community together, a gathering cannot be planned at the moment, especially since the hall is closed. We hope to be able to announce a new date once restrictions are lifted.
