YCA Annual General Meeting

The YCA will be hosting its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, February 12, at Youbou Hall. We’ll be electing board members for 2023, giving our year-end report, sharing preliminary results from our survey, as well as unveiling some of our plans for 2023. If you’re interested in serving on the board, contact julia@raedwulf.org. We hope to see you there!

Take Our Survey

Tell us what you think. What’s important to you in Youbou and Area I? Take 5 minutes to fill out our quick online survey so your YCA Board knows where to focus our efforts and resources in 2023. The survey will close on Wednesday, February 15. Click on the link to fill us in. https://forms.gle/1KoPPm2dokj8PX6EA

Euchre Tournament

Back by popular demand is the Youbou Euchre tournament. Beginners and seasoned Euchre players are welcome to join in the fun on Sunday afternoon, February 19 at 1 pm. To fund the prizes, players will be asked to contribute a toonie to join the fun. Bring snacks to share and a winning attitude.

Valentine Tea

You’re invited to an afternoon of coffee, tea and sweet treats at the church on Saturday, February 11, from 11 am to 2 pm. The Church Society is eager to show off the recent renovations that have given our community building a fresh face. You’ll also have the opportunity to buy some home-baked items from some of Youbou’s best bakers, hand-crafted items, and a few second-hand treasures.

Area I Community Plan

Representatives from the CVRD are presenting the Official Community Plan for Area I (Youbou/Meade Creek) on Thursday, Februrary 23 from 4 to 8 pm at the Youbou Community Hall. Thanks to all those volunteers who participated in the Community Circle discussions in 2022 to help move this plan forward.

Fun at the Pub

Tune up those vocal chords to show Youbou’s got talent (or not) at Karaoke night on February 4 at the Youbou Bar & Grill. The fun starts at 7 pm. On February 12, you can tune into the Superbowl game at the pub, where there will be games, prizes, food and drink specials (after the YCA Annual General Meeting at Youbou Hall, of course). February 14 is Valentines, where two can dine for $50. Dress up and walk the red carpet on Oscar night on March 12. Beer Connoisseurs should gear up their palates for the Beer Tasting dinner on March 25, where five courses will each be paired with a different complementary brew. Live music nights are February 11 with Trip ’n Me at 7 pm and March 4 with One Hit Away playing at 8 pm.

Kids Art Workshop

On Saturday, February 4, Studio77 artworks is offering a fun workshop for kids age 6 and older, from 11 am to 2 pm at Youbou Hall. Budding artists will work on art and crafts and play games. The cost is $45 per child. To register, call 778-922-2270 or email studio77artworks@gmail.com

Bowl ’em Over

The winter bowling season is here. Fridays are family nights, Saturdays is open bowling for adults. League play is on Sundays for adults, Tuesdays for men, and Thursdays for women, but league nights welcome guest bowlers. The bowling alley usually opens at 7 pm. Make it a plan to enjoy our unique bowling alley at least once this season. Youbou Lanes is historic as one of the last hand-set bowling alleys on the continent.

TOPS Is Tops

Shedding a few pounds after too many holiday sugar plums may still be on your 2023 resolutions list. You can find good support and company at the TOPs meeting every Tuesday at 10:30 at the church. TOPS stands for Take Off Pounds Sensibly, which sounds like a good plan.

From Our Area I Director

By Karen Deck

“Many thanks to the 50+ people who turned out on January 12 for the first Area I meeting of this term, to Eva Fearon for setting up the coffee station, and to Katherine Worsley for taking the photos of the meeting! I was glad to see good representation from the entire area.

Issues that have been brought to my attention were posted on the wall and folks were asked to indicate their top three concerns. From greatest to least, here are the results:

Taxes, Speeding, Lakeshore Access, Walking/Cycling paths, Riparian Infractions, Emergency Preparedness, Lights on the Highway, Fog lines, Elk, Plowing, Free Store, Bylaw Infractions, Connectivity, Garbage Pick-up and Flooding.

People had the opportunity to share their particular concerns and I took notes, so I will share those with you in a future post.

Water sustainability came up often during the election campaign and it arose again when I spoke of the Youbou lands development. I will ask staff how best to present it to the community, because there was a lot of interest in hearing more.

People have emailed me with offers to help. I will be in contact with them to develop some action plans. Chris Leischner has offered help with this. If we work together, we can make good things happen. Please email me if you haven’t already, so I can provide the information you need.

Save Our Holmes Society Update

By Dee Watt, Interim President, SOH

The big 2022 news in our neck of the woods is the carbon credit sequestering of the forests on Mount Holmes and Mount Good! Mosaic Forest Management has chosen 1,000 hectares in Youbou as part of the BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative and, in doing so, has promised not to log those hectares for at least 25 years.

Our leader at Save Our Holmes, Karen Deck, has been elected as Area 1 Director of Youbou and Meade Creek, leaving a very big position to fill as President for our Society. I’ve agreed to step in as interim president until our next annual general meeting in March. I moved to Youbou with my husband Steve in 2018 and soon after became a member of Save Our Holmes. The purpose of our society is to protect the drinking water, wildlife and bio-diverse forests that grow in our backyard. Perhaps, you’ve seen our signs and maybe even attended a meeting where we’ve discussed safety issues and the impacts log harvesting can have on the hills in our small town. We will continue to do this in 2023!

There are still 4 existing cut blocks on Mosaic’s “to do” list for 2023. Targeted for this year are: Meade Creek above Spring Beach, the hills above Creekside and Miracle Way and 400 meters from the start of the Christopher Rock trail, moving westward out of Youbou proper. We were disappointed to hear these areas of Youbou and Meade Creek are still slated for harvesting, especially with the salmon returning to the creeks below some of the harvest zones.

Save Our Holmes Society will keep you up to date with any news regarding these areas.

Follow us on Facebook at Youbou “SAVE Our Holmes” (that’s SAVE with all caps) or join us and become a member for $5. Contact saveourholmes@gmail.com
